In Trace of Huda, Amina, Maysam and Arsal

Huda and Amina, refugees from Syria, live in Arsal, on the Anti-Lebanon mountains in Lebanon. Joined by Maysam from Bekaa, they initiated The Arsal Women’s Circle. Reaching out to 25 women at first, they continue to grow and expand. In this project, based on the case study and interviews conducted by Women Now for Development, Maya follows the trail of their story through geographic clues and associations.
Guided by the flora of these regions, she uses carob, cherry and thyme plants as pigments to produce topographic maps of Lebanon rainfall and Arsal isohyps and frames depicting the journey of a partly imagined seed. With thoughts of displacement, community and rooting at its core, these frames, along with text and sound, come together as a video and physically disperse across the exhibition space.
